Fields enclosed in rectangles are required. Unenclosed fields are optional. Keys can be whatever you want, but they must be one word and should not be duplicated. I use as key the last name (or last names separated by dashes if there is more than one) and the last two digits of the date. If this is still not a unique key, I then append lower case letters to the key (e.g. Smith88a). In the Author field, author names should be given in full with first name first, and separated by "and". If the name contains "and", then put curly brackets around the name. If the name has a comma within it, put curly brackets around it. Do not use "&" in any field, or LaTeX will complain about tabs. See the aforementioned appendix for details on handling "Jr", "von", and other, more unusual names. The "Notes" field, however, is not the BibTeX notes entry, but notes to yourself, such as a review or summary of an article. The "Key Words" field is used to hold key words for the article. In these two fields, if you select a word or phrase from the text and hold down the option key, the stack will beep and search for the next occurrence of that word or phrase in a "Key Words" field. It will beep again if it can't find anything. If, instead of the option key, you hold down the Cloverleaf key, then it will search the "Key" field instead. Thus to reference related works, just put their keys in the Notes field; go to them by selecting the key text and pressing the Cloverleaf key. The "Location" field is not a BibTeX field, but simply for your convenience. This is a good place to note the location of books and papers, and write down the name of people who borrow them.
